Learning for Life Sonny’s Character Camp
The 7th Annual “Sonny’s Character Camp” took place June 9-13 at Lovell Elementary School in Apopka. The event is sponsored by Sonny’s Real Pit BBQ in partnership with Central Florida Council’s Learning for Life program. This a free week-long day camp is for elementary aged children and is modeled after Cub Day Camp. Campers are divided into groups and led by a staff of community volunteers – both older youth and adults. Every day there is a focus on character development and one camper per group each day is awarded a “Character Kid of the Day” certificate.
Sonny’s BBQ arranged for daily special activities from a wide variety of community supporters that included visits from the Orlando Magic, the Coastal Anglers, the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Orange County Fire Department, the Be Fit-Be Cool Organization, the Dr. Philips Performing Arts Center, the Orlando Philharmonic, the Orlando Ballet, the Coca-Cola Scientist, and the C.A.R.E. Foundation. Campers also enjoyed many other activities that included making GAK, lava lamps, pine cone bird feeders (pine cones courtesy of Camp LaNoChe!), flag folding, knot tying & ice cream in a bag – just to name a few! Together, we touched the lives of 100+ campers each day.
Learning for Life would like to extend a very special “THANK YOU!” to Montana Smith, & Jessica Hale and the team at Sonny’s Real Pit BBQ, to all of our volunteers & community supporters, and also to Principal Oscar Aguirre of Lovell Elementary School & his staff for providing the location and support. This event just keeps getting better and better and we are looking forward to another great camp next year!
