Merit Badge Counselors

MBCThe merit badge counselor is a key player in the Boy Scout advancement program. Whatever your area of expertise or interest—whether it is a special craft or hobby, a profession, or perhaps a life skill —as a merit badge counselor, you can play a vital role in stirring a young man’s curiosity about that particular topic. By serving as a merit badge counselor, you offer your time, knowledge, and other resources so that Scouts can explore a topic of interest.

How to become a Merit Badge Counselor or SuperNova Awards Mentor for Apopka Shores.

1.       Complete the COUNCIL COPY of an Adult Application.

2.      Complete a Criminal Background Check Disclosure/Authorization Form.

3.      Complete a Merit Badge Counselor Information Form or SuperNova Awards Mentor Application.

4.      Complete a Shooting Sports Merit Badge Counselor Registration Form if you wish to be a Merit Badge
Counselor for Archery or Rifle Shooting or Shotgun Shooting merit badges.

5.     Complete Youth Protection Training (Y01) (        Youth Protection Training ) and print out the Youth Protection Training Certificate.

6.     Complete Merit Badge Counselor Orientation (D76) or Supernova Mentor Training (D82) and print a
copy of your Completed Class Certificate or Training Certificate (whichever applies to the registered
position you are requesting). See training details below.

7.      Mail‐in the above information to the District Merit Badge Counselor/SuperNova Awards Coordinator
(contact information listed below). This includes the 5 or 6 above‐listed documents for his/her review,
approval and signature so he/she may then forward them to council for processing.

If you are already a Registered Merit Badge Counselor or SuperNova Awards Mentor –

How to Add (A) or Drop (D) Merit Badges or SuperNova Awards to/from your Profile

1.      Complete a Merit Badge Counselor Information Form or SuperNova Awards Mentor Application.

2.     Complete Youth Protection Training if not current Youth Protection Training  and                  print out a Youth Protection Training Certificate.

3.      Complete Merit Badge Counselor Orientation (D76) or Supernova Mentor Training (D82) and make a
copy of your Completed Class Certificate or Training Certificate (whichever applies to the registered
position you are requesting). See training details below.

4.     Mail‐in OR electronically email the above information (as attached PDFs) to the District Merit Badge
Counselor/SuperNova Awards Coordinator (contact information listed below). This includes the three (3)
above‐listed documents for his/her review.

Merit Badge Counselor Orientation Training (D76)

There are two ways to complete merit badge orientation:

1.     Check your Apopka Shores Roundtable calendar. In‐Person training will be offered once every other
month. Sign‐up with Theresa Nead, Advancement Chair

2.    a.   Watch the online orientation class: The Essentials

b.  Take the 25 question quiz at: On Line Test  You will receive a class              grade via email. A score of 21 or better will serve as your Completed Class Certification.

Supernova Mentor Training (D82)

1.      You should first review all the supernova course documentation at On Line Documentation

2.       Sign‐up for in‐person training at the annual Scouting University. Check the district calendar for dates and
schedules.

Check Your Training Records

  1.  Your training records should be updated within two weeks after submittal.  If you receive a Scout ID or already have one, you can check your record by going to my.scouting.org, logging in and go to your training.  If your record does not show D76 Merit Badge Orientation, please go to the following link and fill out the form so you will receive credit for the course:  Request Credit

Notes

1.        Youth Protection must be renewed every two year and must remain current to continue serving as a merit
badge counselor or mentor. Counselors with expired YPT automatically get removed during council recharter.

2.        Council allows electronic submission of documents for existing counselors only. Electronic documents
should be in PDF format. All remaining fist‐time applicants, or applicants that do not exist in the system,
must submit hard‐copy documents with original signature.
